Atrophy is Sad

By

Atrophy is disguised as more time.
Always more time, more days.
Blinding us to its thievery,
It Slyly takes, sneaks,
Bits here. Pieces there,
Chipping away at, or eroding.

Creeping, so quiet. Unobtrusive.
Blending in. Elusive, coy.
Promising another sunny day.
Many more sunny days!
Blinding us, to its petty ways.

Like wildlife, it grazes.
Comforting us.
Like a favourite song,
We know we can hear again, and again.
There’s always more time,
A next time. A tomorrow.

Non-chalant in its ways.
“Don’t notice me.”
“pay me no mind.”
“I am merely a ghost, a shadow.”
“Only seen out of the corner of your eye.”
“I’m no threat to you,” it says.

Never famished, Atrophy dines leasurely
Lifetimes short or long, it’s nourishment.
Our experiences, joys, and sorrows. It’s sustenance .
Not gobbling the entire plate at once.
But Nibbling, tiny bites.
Slowly. Relentless teeth Grinding away, Masticating.
Chew, chew, chew.
Taking thousands of years.
Slurping, licking it all up, tho, in the end…..

Hours, days, years, generations, centuries,
There’s no rush. No timetable or schedule to keep.
In the end
It or we, disappear.
There’s always an abundance. A cornucopia left over.
This is a meal that is never ends.
Atrophy will sit at the dining room table for eternity.
We have been tricked.

Time, is Atrophy disguised
Time, is atrophy disguised,
Beginning. As a spark, ignition, inspired!
Dreams. Living, breathing, ideas.
The planning, imagining,
Moving, action, purpose.
Constructing, Building, creating.
Completion, pride, marvelling, enjoying.

Days, months, years. Passing by.
Forgetting the “newness” feeling.
Our creations, achievements, important moments,
Still there. Existing and Unseen.

Seemingly Slow, a leisurely stroll.
Yet, underneath, a steadfast determination. A purpose.
Look closely and see. A destination. An ending.
Like a turtle on a thousand-mile walk,
Patient, determined in its deception.

Time, is Atrophy disguised.
Milestones, rights of passage.
Stages developing. Crawling, first steps.
Lifetimes, evolving, hustling, bustling.
Planets rotating, seasons changing.
Generations forgotten. Shadows imprinting.

Time, is Atrophy disguised.
Chipping away at, eroding.
Evolving, revolving, happening,
In slow motion, or fast and furious.
The living of lives. Studiously
Persistent.

Atrophy, in the end, undisguised.
A debt. Payment due.
Crumble, crash, kaboom! It falls.
In the blink of an eye.
In a moment, a second, a flash.
In the end, we see.
Awake, aware, and sad.
And we say,
“Oh, how time flies.”
