My Christmas Rant. I've shared some "far-fetched" reforms I'd like to see to make things fair in the world. Where people aren't oppressed and marginalized. Where vulnerable people like children, the disabled, and elders are protected. These changes would be fought tooth and nail though. Why? Greed. Plain and simple. I'm tired of it.
Do the most wealthy (privileged) take the time to think about how their materialism during the holidays negatively impacts children? Kids whose parents may not have the financial resources to provide a bounty of gifts for their children at Christmas. And let's face it, there is more than just finances that impact the kind of Christmas a child will have. There is alcoholism, addiction, abuse, neglect, and mental illness. All of which, often go hand in hand with poverty.
So these children get shafted big time at Christmas. Without some level-headed parent who tries to make their child's Christmas special, regardless of their financial ability, how festive do you think their Christmas is going to be? So Santa comes for some children and not others? Some children receive deluxe Barbie houses, and motorized tractors, while other kids might get a few dollar-store toys if they're lucky?
And really, fuck Santa. We need to abolish Santa Claus as he is currently portrayed. An old man watching you all year to see if you're naughty or nice? And let's face it, the naughty kids who are wealthy will still have piles of gifts to open Christmas morning. Why can't Santa be a nice old man who visits schools and malls and hands out Candy? Who teaches the importance of being kind to each other. I don't fuken know.
Santa will no longer break into houses and bestow gifts to deserving children. Instead, Santa Claus works year-round to find ways to reach the most isolated and oppressed children and show them that they are remembered and loved during the holidays. I think children will handle knowing that it is their parents buying their gifts at Christmas and not some magical guy with a white beard who secretly watches them all year.
And this is my wish, I know it will never happen, but here it is: I wish parents would refrain from the gross amount of gifts they are giving their children. Additionally, every single impoverished and marginalized family needs to be sponsored at Christmas. Organizations such as Christmas Amalgamated simply cannot reach everyone in need. Some families get sponsored and some don't. It is unfair.
Every single family deserves a nice Christmas. I'm thinking more of the children, but there are very lonely, isolated elders as well. I think everyone who can afford to spend vast amounts of wealth on their families during the holidays can also afford to at least donate a good chunk of money to a charity that helps marginalized families during Christmas.
BTW, I'm leaving religion out of the equation, because not everyone is a Christian.
And I am not talking to you personally. You may not be in the category of people Iām talking about. But, I think we need to at least talk to children about poverty and ways they can help as a family. I mean, it should be a government program because we simply can't rely on the wealthy to be generous.
I'm not perfect by any means. One year, we had an abundance of wealth, and I became temporarily insane due to the Christmas marketing, lol! I spent so much money on gifts. It was really for me, and not them. My three-year-old daughter just got very overwhelmed and wasn't interested by the time Grandma came by with a nice gift for her. That was the only year I did that. I mean, the toys and Lego were fun for me, too. It was like I was a child, buying everything I ever wanted.
That same year, we sponsored a family for Christmas, making sure they got some very nice gifts that they'd enjoy. It was a friend of a friend, so I was able to find out what the children wished for. Other years all we could do was volunteer for Christmas Amalgimated. And sometimes it's the last thing I feel like doing, bah humbug, right? But my husband always drags me there, and I'm glad he does.
I propose we simplify Christmas and stop making it such a huge fucking deal. Maybe communities can band together and have a giant Christmas dinner where all are welcome. Do you think all seniors and children are able to enjoy a nice hot meal at Christmas? Some won't eat at all that day.
It evokes in me a visceral anger at the injustice of it all. Imagine being the child going back to school in January and hearing all the kids talk about what Santa brought them. Will they not wonder why Santa shafted them so badly? Honestly, fuk capitalism too. At the same time. I'm sick of it. We just can't have a normal amount of anything. Capitalism could work, but due to our greed, it is out of hand.
I think I might be a communist. Or maybe a socialist? I don't know. But again, some fascist dictator would come along and ruin a really good idea, tainting everyone's perspective on what true communism means.
Well, thank you for reading my rant. I'm sick and fucken tired of the charade I see being played out all around me every single goddamn year. I'm sick of the injustices of the world. I'm sick of vulnerable children and elders being overlooked. Mostly I'm sick of all the goddamn greed and consumerism which ultimately is fueled by the capitalist society we are all forced to participate in.
